Asset Management as a discipline has been evolving over the past 30 years. In the last 10 we have seen standards and guides like PAS55, ISO 55001 & GFMAM 39 Subjects attempt to define what the characteristics of good asset management look like. There are many models and views in the industry, many pushing concepts such as 'World class' or ‘Best Practice’. Our deep understanding of the discipline gained over the last 30 years has led us to believe that these concepts are great but what organizations are looking for are tangible delivery methods based on real-life understanding of the organisational context.

Gaussian have defined a delivery focused model on Effective Asset Management. The definition of effective is 'successful in producing a desired or intended result’ and ultimately that is what all businesses, public or private, aim for. The delivery model has three main elements. The Foundational aspects where data accuracy, granularity and integrity are key and feed into the models elements. The Strategic is the translation and coordination of the overall business objectives applicable to Asset Management. The last, and probably the most important, is the Delivery Focused aspect. This is where the day-to-day delivery happens and where Strategy meets the Foundational elements.

The Effective Asset Management Delivery Model is a framework which practitioners can sustainably execute against. In doing so, they can be assured that they are covering all of the key enablers to implementing an effective asset management system. It is important to note that this model is not a prescriptive model, it only tells you what you should be focusing on, not how to achieve them. How an organisation achieves them depends greatly on their operating context, their industry and their specific objectives. 



Any organisation can only embark on a change journey if it is organisationally ready, and has the appropriate skills and competency. Gaussian has developed a people-centered approach to ensuring that any intervention has the supporting levels of engagement and competency for success.



Over the last 30 years Gaussian has been intensely analysing what creates asset performance. In this time we have documented, deeply analysed, and come to resolute conclusions as to the levers of performance. This is a fact based model based on deep learning. We have published these conclusions (Developing an Effective Asset Management Delivery Model) where we detail the journey taken developing this pragmatic model seen below. This model is fully aligned with ISO 55000.


The aim of this Delivery Model is to create a framework which practitioners can execute against.



Understanding what constitutes organisational value is the cornerstone to realising value from asset management. Organisational value is not just pure financial gain, even though it is often a significant part of it. Value can be seen as a composite of various value levers as seen in the below diagram. These levers are in dynamic tension with one another, their importance constantly changing with the organisations strategic intent and operating context.


The aim of asset management is to be able to deliver against these organisational values.



Asset Management is all about consistently making better decisions aimed at reinforcing organisational objectives. For this there has to be a clear path between collecting the appropriate and accurate data which is synthesised into evidence for decision making. This reinforces both management of risk and identifying opportunity.


Gaussian has significant experience in ensuring data accuracy and integrity together with creating dashboards and reports which facilitate evidence based decision making.


Managing and sustaining performance is all about managing risk, using knowledge to create mechanisms for preventing bad things from happening, at the same time exploiting opportunity in a managed fashion. Gaussian has developed an integrated approach to managing risk and opportunity and has a suite of tools which assist asset managers with risk based decisions.



There is a deep body of evidence from real life situations that clearly indicates that value is created from an integrated approach. In fact, putting too much emphasis on one or two of the enablers at the expense of integration can often lead to value destruction.
