Why is data visualization so important?

At Gaussian we are always looking for better ways to visualize data.

The first and most obvious reason is that effective visualizations help people to understand the key message of the data. But visualizations can also play a role in defining what that key message is.

The above figures are undeniably dull, but they illustrate an important point; Visualization matters.

All four of the data sets pictured above have the same simple descriptive statistics (mean and sample variance of x & y, correlation between x & y, and line of linear regression) but when visualized in this way tell a completely different story.

When making data-driven decisions it is always worth looking a layer deeper to understand why the data is 'saying' what it is.
